WONDERFUL WALKIES

As a dog walker I am constantly asked for recommendations for lovely local dog walks. We have so many hidden gems around Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch that I never even knew about until I got my own dogs.

Out & About specialises in adventure walks. This is because co-founders (Max and Alfie the spaniels) love exploring new places. We love to go on long adventures and love to take new dogs with us to experience the fun. I am often recommending walks to my clients for a variety of reasons including:

  • Quieter walks that are stress free for the dogs as you don't meet as many people/dogs as you do at some of the more popular spots.

  • Easy access walks with gravel paths that are suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs.

  • Walkies with lots of safe swimming opportunities which are perfect for the pups that love a splash and paddle.

I therefore thought it would be a good idea to to create a page on my website dedicated to wonderful walkies.

*I'm constantly updating website with new dog walk recommendations so make sure you like and follow our Facebook page so you don't miss out (all updates are posted on there)*

Beach Walks

We love to walk every section of the beach from Sandbanks- Hengistbury Head (restrictions in certain places from May-October). But did you know there's also some beautiful walks leading down to the beach.

Max and Alfie's personal favourite is 'Branksome Chine Gardens'. A beautiful stroll alongside a little stream. There is a path that follows through the gardens so access is relatively easy for all.

Water Walks

We often refer to Max as our little otter boy. He absolutely loves the water and will go for a swim at any given opportunity. Here's a list of some of his favourite swimming locations:

  • Throop Mill- River Stour (BOURNEMOUTH)

  • Kingfisher barn- River Stour (BOURNEMOUTH)

  • Cherry tree- River Stour (BOURNEMOUTH)

  • Millhams Mead Nature Reserve (BOURNEMOUTH)

  • Iford playing fields (TUCKTON)

  • Hengistbury Head (SOUTHBOURNE)

  • Canford park SANG (BEARWOOD)

  • Potterne park to Moors Valley (VERWOOD)

  • Lake Pier and Ham Common (HAMWORTHY)

  • Canford Magna- River Stour (parking off of Oakley lane)

  • Witchampton (WIMBORNE) Start by the cross roads of Lawrence Lane and Witchampton Mill and head under the arch with the iron gates. Follow that path to the right and it will bring you down to the river

Whilst most of these locations offer safe and shallow water to paddle and swim in, please never leave your dog unattended. Also be careful when the rivers are swollen as the water is much deeper and fast flowing.

Woodland Walks

Alfie is a typical spaniel that loves exploring in the woods and loves vast areas where he is able to run through the trees. Here's a list of some of his favourite woodland locations:

  • Strouden woods (BOURNEMOUTH)

  • Slades farm (BOURNEMOUTH)

  • Queens park golf course (BOURNEMOUTH)

  • Meryrick park golf course (BOURNEMOUTH)

  • Delph Woods (MERLEY)

  • West moors plantation (WEST MOORS)

  • Stephen's Castle viewpoint (VERWOOD)

  • Badbury rings (BLANDFORD FORUM)

  • St Catherines Hill (CHRISTCHURCH)

  • Steamer point nature reserve (CHRISTCHURCH)

  • Avon Causeway forest (HURN)

  • Upton Country park (POOLE)

  • Wareham forest (WAREHAM)

  • NEW FOREST WALKS- some personal favourites include: Linford Bottom, Wilverley Inclosure, Millyford Bridge, Woods Corner, Whitefield Moor

Stress Free Walks

These locations are perfect for those doggies that find it overwhelming around other dogs and people. Whilst it is inevitable that other walkers will be around, these locations tend to be quieter or have strict on-lead only policies in place.

  • Longham Lakes (Dogs should be kept on-lead at all times)

  • Stanpit Marsh (Dogs should be kept on-lead at all times)

  • Poole Park (Dogs should be kept on-lead at all times)

  • Canford Heath (Quieter location with vast areas to walk)

  • Turbary Common (Quieter location with vast areas to walk)

  • West Moors Plantation (Quieter location with vast areas to walk)

  • Moors Valley (Quieter location with vast areas to walk- although much busier at weekends and school holidays)

  • Avon Causeway (Lots of quieter walks around here)

  • Arne Nature Reserve (Dogs should be kept on-lead at all times)

  • National Trust sites (Dogs should be kept on-lead at all times)

Easy Access Walks

These locations are ideal for those with wheelchairs or prams that require a relatively flat surface to go along. Most of these offer a gravel path that is easy to travel along.

  • Longham Lakes (Gravel path- Although dogs should be kept on-lead at all times)

  • Kingfisher Barn to Cherry Tree River Stour (Gravel path the whole way along)

  • Canford Park Sang (Gravel path the whole way along)

  • Hengistbury head (Certain routes have a paved path the whole way along)

  • Whitecliff Recreation Ground to Baiter (Flat paved path the whole way- you can even venture down to Poole Quay too)

  • Beach walks (Along the promenade is a flat paved path)

Enclosed Areas

These locations are great for practising recall with your dogs. They are all free sites so please bare in mind others may want to use them too but nevertheless I am always recommending them to my clients and they prove a big hit.

  • Upton Country Park- Has multiple fenced enclosures that can be used

  • Slades Farm- Has an enclosure with wooden dog agility equipment free to use

  • Cherry Tree (Available to use when the cows are not in there). Free car park marked at yellow and the gated enclosure is marked at purple.

  • Hengistbury Head (Large enclosure opposite the Hiker Cafe)

  • Canford Park Sang- The whole park itself is relatively safe with a river one side and a fence the other but they also have a free enclosure in the main park you can use (as well as ones you can pay to hire at the car park and by the cafe)

  • Bytheway field (Wimborne)- Please note this isn't an enclosure as such but the main entrances/ exits are gated so it provides a relatively safe space

The enclosures at Cherry Tree and Hengistbury Head are much bigger than the others so perfect to practice recall in a larger area. Maps attached at the bottom of this page.
